Writer's picture: Andi Dela Torre GriffithsAndi Dela Torre Griffiths

Hi again, welcome back to the blog! 💜

Last year, I shared a Kuala Lumpur and Selangor primer with information you need to know before you go. Today (as promised), I’ll provide you with a list of places to check out.

If you have an upcoming trip to Malaysia or plan to go there soon, you can add some of these to your itinerary.

Where to Go | Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Travel Guide

1 Menara KL (KL Tower)

Menara KL is the seventh tallest communication tower in the world and the first in Southeast Asia. I highly recommend you visit this and try the Tower Walk 100, where you can walk at the tower edges and enjoy the city views. It’s a safe activity that even senior citizens can enjoy.

2 Taman Tasik Permaisuri Park

If you like visiting parks, spend a few hours at Taman Tasik Permaisuri. It’s a spacious park in Cheras where you can stroll, meditate, or work out (they have a playground and an area with calisthenics equipment).  If you want to grab food and drinks, you can walk to Komune Living & Wellness, a nearby commercial area where you can dine, get a massage, or chill. The park is open from 7 AM to 8 PM. Admission is free.

3 Aquaria KLCC

If you’re traveling with kids, a trip to Aquaria would be ideal because there are plenty of sea creatures to see here. There’s also a piranha-eating show in the afternoon that you can watch.

4 Bacha Suria KLCC

Our next item on the list is Bacha Coffee. It's a beautiful cafe where you can enjoy delicious drinks in a relaxed setting. If you're heading to Suria KLCC, you might as well stop by. It's in front of the dancing fountain.

5 Sunway Lagoon

For fun activities, you can visit Sunway Lagoon. It's a popular attraction that offers various parks that cater to different interests (Water Park, Amusement Park, Wildlife Park, XPark, Scream Park & Sunway Lost Lagoon).

6 ESCAPE at Petaling Jaya

Feel like a kid again when you book a pass at ESCAPE, an indoor adventure park that offers challenging rope courses and other fun activities. I highly recommend ESCAPE because it’s super fun and thrilling. It is also inside a mall, so it's easy to find, and you have pretty much everything you may need.

7 Petaling Street Market (in Chinatown)

Petaling Street Market is ideal for those who want to try Asian street food and shop for imitation designer bags. They also have toys, accessories, perfumes, and clothes. But, as an Asian from the Philippines, I found the items expensive. We could get the same stuff in our country for lower prices and better quality.

8 Guan Di Temple

A few steps away from the Petaling Street Market arch is Guan Di Temple (Taoist). You’ll see it right away when you exit. It’s the Red and Gold structure with dragons at the front. It's a solemn spot where you can light an incense and pray.

9 Sri Maha Mariamman Temple

Another beautiful temple you can visit is the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, which is close to Petaling Street Market and Guan Di Temple. This one has such a great, happy, and fun combination of colors. Very pleasing to the eyes. Admission here is also free, but there is a fee for leaving your shoes at the shoe rack (footwear is not allowed inside).

10 KLCC Park

Another park on the list is KLCC Park, where you can jog, meditate, watch the light and sound water shows, or exercise. It's a big area with access to the Suria KLCC Mall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Petronas Twin Towers, and hotels.

There is also a playground, a pool area, and water fountains in this park.

11 Thean Hou Temple

A stunning temple you shouldn’t miss when visiting Kuala Lumpur is Thean Hou Temple; a six-tiered structure overlooking the city. It’s one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia, and it’s beautiful. Admission is free. I highly recommend that you visit this place, guys. It looks good in the afternoon. You can watch the sunset from any of the viewing decks.

12 Petronas Towers

The iconic twin structure is probably the most popular landmark in the city. It symbolizes Kuala Lumpur's progress, development, and urbanization. If you want to see what’s inside and go on the observation decks, they have different packages available.

13 Merdeka Square

Also known as Independence Square, Merdeka Square is a stunning historic building where Malaysia declared independence from British rule in 1957. This popular spot is one of the stops when you take a HOHO bus.

14 Batu Caves

You can’t go to Selangor without visiting Batu Caves—yup, it’s the one with colorful stairs and the 140-foot statue of Lord Murugan. Admission is free, but there is a small fee of 5RM to enter the Cave Villa. You can explore this spot on your own or join a tour.

15 Bukit Bintang

Bukit Bintang is one of Kuala Lumpur’s entertainment districts. Here, you can find plenty of bars, cafes, and restaurants. It is also close to the posh Pavilion Mall, where you can shop for designer goods.

16 Zoo Negara Malaysia

Animal lovers will have a great time visiting Malaysia’s biggest zoo. It is only around 30 minutes from Kuala Lumpur. There is plenty to see here. Not to mention, they also have interactive multi-animal shows that both kids and adults can enjoy.

17 Skyline Luge Kuala Lumpur

For a memorable experience away from the hustle and bustle of the city, I highly recommend Skyline Luge in Rawang. Here, you can go on different rides while enjoying unobstructed views of the nearby mountains.

Shopping Malls

Do you want to go shopping?

Malaysians love their malls and there are tons of them in the city. Here are good ones you can visit: The Exchange TRX, Paradigm Mall, Suria KLCC, Pavilion, MidValley Megamall, and The Gardens. These are all located in Kuala Lumpur.
