Fresh Market Finds | Fish, Mussels, and Veggies

Writer's picture: Andi Dela Torre GriffithsAndi Dela Torre Griffiths

Recently, we visited the wet market to replenish our stocks at home. We do this every month now or whenever we run out of food. Local markets offer the cheapest and freshest fish, pork, and poultry, so we make it a point to get most of our meat there. The same goes for our vegetables. Malaki yung natitipid naman talaga.

The only items we're getting from the grocery now are dry goods, pasta, biscuits, juice, pork sukiyaki (sometimes), sauces, and cooking condiments. Well, not unless we need something urgently hehe.

Some of Our Fresh Market Finds

Today, I'll share some of our fresh market finds, which we were happy about. Weekday pala kami pumunta para hindi matao, mas madali din umikot.

For this trip, we got plenty of fish. And as usual, we have salmon bellies, chopped salmon heads, and marinated milkfish (we love Sinigang). Pero actually pang skincare ko din talaga yung salmon nakakaganda kasi sya ng balat hahaha.

Anyway, we also bought some pork chops, squid, and shrimp.

I repack everything and organize them into portions to make meal preparation easier. I learned this when I managed our little snack bar many years ago. Doing this is more efficient than thawing the whole plastic bag of fish or meat when you only need to cook half or one-fourth of that bag. Maganda rin tignan freezer kapag nakaayos sila.

We were also able to get some mussels and fresh seaweed. Yum!

Over here, we have fresh fruits and vegetables. Such a treat! Hindi pa hinog yung avocados so inuna na namin yung pears and seedless oranges.

We got the lemons for 20 pesos each (around $0.35). These are for our honey lemon drinks.

While waiting for our ride, it suddenly started to rain; this was a peaceful moment. All we could hear was the sound of the raindrops. Wala lang, cute moment lang sya.

When we got home, we were thinking what to eat first. It made sense to start with the seaweed, so I just made a lato salad. Naubos namin agad. It tasted so good with fried fish. We had it with daing na bangus (marinated milkfish) and rice. Cravings satisfied! We also finished half of the mussels for merienda. Pinapak na namin and ininom yung soup. We also saved some for the next day. I think next time we’ll get more. That’s it for today, thanks for stopping by!
