Dive Into the World of Marine Animals at Aquaria | Kuala Lumpur
Back in high school, I remember we had a Science teacher who loved to talk about anything sea-related. She always said that while there have been plenty of discoveries about marine life, there is still much to explore. Oh, how right she was. It makes sense because most of the Earth's surface is covered by water (and also, according to UNESCO, humans have only explored 5% of the ocean, whoaa).
Now, I think I understand her fascination with the underwater world. It really is very interesting.
That said, join me today as I take you to an aquarium in Kuala Lumpur. Let's get acquainted with beautiful sea creatures together.
Visiting Aquaria in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
If you’re looking for a family-friendly attraction within the city, a trip to Aquaria is a great idea. It’s an oceanarium located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur and is close to other popular tourist attractions.
Location | Where to Find the Oceanarium
You can find Aquaria on the lower ground floor of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, within the famous Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC).
How to Get There:
If you’re coming from Suria Mall, look for the indoor underpass tunnel (near the Cold Storage grocery store)- this will lead you to Aquaria.
If you're booking a Grab, pin KLCC Park. Once you arrive, you can enter the park or go through the convention center to get to Aquaria (near the food court). It takes less than five minutes to get there from both points.
What’s Inside | Exhibitions
There are plenty of ocean animals to see at this place. I didn’t know where to look first when we entered, but there are ten different exhibitions inside, and these are the following: Evolution Zone, Touch Zone, Jewels of Jungle, Shipwreck, Weird and Wonderful, The Stream, Station Aquarius, Flooded Forest, The Coastal, and Living Ocean.
Okay, so let's start with stingrays...
We learned that while stingrays are close relatives of sharks (like flattened versions hehe), the hammerhead type preys on them. Below is one of the many stingrays we saw at the aquarium. Is it just me, or does it look like it's smiling?
I loved the 90-meter tunnel at the Living Ocean section the most. That's where the sharks and the stingrays were. It was humbling to be down there and be among other living beings that most of us don't regularly encounter. Animals, in general, are fascinating because they are intelligent and capable. They do not speak our language, but they understand abstract concepts and know how to survive.
So, let's talk about the photo above. The one on the left was meant to show the size of a megalodon's jaw, while the one on the right is a sand tiger shark- this one can live for up to 80 years. It felt great seeing it swim above us, even though it looked grumpy, hehe.
Now, who doesn't recognize these? Thanks to Disney's Finding Nemo, we can now spot clownfish easily.
This section of the oceanarium looked so pleasant with the wavy ceiling, Blue lights, and glow-in-the-dark corals and reefs.
As you keep going, you’ll see a flight of stairs that will take you to the lower level, where you can find a massive cylinder aquarium in the middle. Here, you can look at Arapaima fishes and Brown-banded bamboo sharks.
Expect more information as you go along. You'll see plenty of visual aids to help you understand what they are showing in the exhibits. This one over here focuses on microbes.
Quick Refresher:
Microbes are organisms that are too small to be seen by our naked eyes. They require the use of a microscope. I guess this is why they have realistic illustrations, so it's easier for visitors to visualize how they look.
In this part of the oceanarium, you can learn about the growing phases of sharks and have a closer look at seahorses. There is also an extensive glass display of shells, fish jaws, corals, and lobsters.

While You’re There
Before or after your trip to Aquaria, you might as well visit the beautiful KLCC Park, watch the light and sound fountain show (8 PM), grab dinner at the Suria KLCC Mall, or visit the Petronas Towers. All the places I mentioned are very close to each other, so you only need to walk to check them out.
That would be all for today. If you enjoyed this article, feel free to check out other reviews on the website. I have more KL content coming up in the coming weeks.
